Honoring and Defending Individual Rights

Ayn Rand Magnet Frame: $4.50     Most people today believe that government exists to improve society.  This is a disastrous premise, because no matter what one defines as "good" for society, individual freedom becomes a dispensable, secondary concern -- a means to an end.

Society is nothing without individuals.  Society, in fact, is nothing but individuals.  Society is not an entity.  It has no goals, no feelings, and no rights.  Only individuals have rights, and those rights exist to protect individuals' freedom against encroachments by other members of society.

To those who say it’s the other way around, that society’s "rights" trump individual freedom, I declare that I am not a means to any social ends, no matter how good they are.

Furthermore, I hold that I have a right to act in whatever manner I wish, so long as I refrain from interfering with anyone else’s freedom to do the same.  My earnings are mine.  My body is mine.  And above all, my mind is mine.

My own independent judgment is the source of all of my beliefs and actions.  You are free to try to persuade me, but you -- whether you are a gangster, a politician, or "society" -- are not free to force me.  I have done nothing to harm you.  And from you, I demand only one thing: that you respect my right to be me.
